Award Winning Integrated Design Combines Form and Function in the Vision VeinViewer

A hand-held medical device using patented near-infrared and LED imaging to view subcutaneous veins on any part of the body is a classic example of how industrial design has skillfully combined form and function.
The Vision VeinViewer, developed by Integrated Design, provides clinicians with a non-invasive technology and revolutionizes patient care while embodying the best attributes of industrial design, according to Michael Paloian, President of Integrated Design Systems based in Great Neck, NY.

Integrated Design improved on the Vision VeinViewer’s functionality and ease of operation for Christie Medical Holdings, Inc. By incorporating new advancements in optical and processing technology, Integrated Design, reduced the size of the device to less than 1/5 of the original size. The compact version enables a clinician to hold a vein-imaging projector in the palm of his hand or mount it to a smaller and more mobile cart base. The digital image of a patient’s veins is projected directly on to the surface of the skin, providing improved clinical treatments and procedures involving IV insertions, PICC line insertions and routine venipuncture.
“Good design artfully applies materials and technologies with a keen understanding of all the factors affecting a product’s purpose,” Paloian explains. “In the case of the VeinViewer device, Integrated Design, examined user preferences, patient needs, environmental conditions, market requirements and hundreds of other parameters which had a profound effect on the product design.” Furthermore, he says, the team was responsible for determining ergonomic criteria, developing concepts for the design configuration, engineering the mechanical design and providing production liaison.
Integrated Design has received acclaim for its design and development of the VeinViewer with a Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) and recognition from the Industrial Designers Society of America. Paloian credits the success of this project and his firm’s other award-winning designs to the team’s multi-disciplinary approach. “Our team maintains a collaborative stance and collective strength in all aspects of industrial design, including creative, materials science, mechanics and manufacturing,” Paloian says.
